The Super Eagles of Nigeria trashed the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 3-2 in a thrilling encounter which saw the Super Eagles progressed into the quarter finals of the AFCON 2019 tournament. Odion Ighalo got the first for the 2013 champions in the 19th minute after his shot took a heavy deflection off Cameroon’s Ambrose Oyongo to make it 1-0.
The Super Eagles seemed to be much in control of the game until they got their first goal. The goal made the Indomitable Lions really react like wounded Lions. The game took a dramatic turn as Cameroon came back in style in the 41st minute, as an inch-perfect cross from Christian Bassogog found Stephane Bahoken, who sets the net ablaze to make it 1-1.
Nigeria had barely recovered from the goal when the Cameroonians came knocking again. Then the Indomitable Lions took the lead three minutes later as Bahoken headed the ball down to Clinton Njie who shows strength and stamina to beat Daniel Akpeyi in goal. 2-1 to Cameroon.
The Super Eagles were no one to give up easily as they fought really hard in the second half. Following the introduction of the Villareal star Chukwueze, the boys in green colors were charged up in the spirit. The Super Eagles fought back in the 63rd minute as Chidozie Awaziem gave a sharp cross to Ahmed Musa who chested down an assist for Igahlo to score his brace. It was level at 2-2.
The Super Eagles still basking in the euphoria of the equalizer, charged once against towards the Cameroon defence. Two minutes later, a well-worked build from Nigeria as Ighalo gave a fantastic pass to Alex Iwobi who finished superbly to give Nigeria a 3-2 win.
The Super Eagles who are now through to the quarterfinals of the tournament will have to wait for whoever scales through between Egypt and South Africa. All the best to the Eagles!
