Nnamdi Kanu and The Igbo People: The Authority In His Words.
The Igbo’s, one of the three most dominant tribes in Nigeria, have been agitating for a separate nation for quite some time. The reasons for the agitation ranges from marginalization to genocide against the Igbo’s, to mention just a few. The struggle is viewed differently by many of the igbo people. Although it can be said that a lot of them are in support of it.
The emergence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on the scene has given the agitation a new look. It has actually taken the struggle to a new dimension. The emergence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu can be traced back to the year 2009, when he anchored the Radio Biafra. There have been a few people that have heading the agitation under different platforms, but one endearing thing about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is his unwillingness to bow even in the face of stiff opposition.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who leads the Independent People Of Biafra (IPOB), has increased his follower-ship over the years. He has gathered a lot of supporters even outside the east and from international communities. He has succeeded in establishing the IPOB family in different countries. It has gotten to a point where a number of his followers see him as a form of god. They virtually worship him. It is not strange any longer to see a number of his teeming supporters address him as ‘our supreme leader’ or ‘messiah’. He has really established himself as an authority in the east.
Let’s take a quick look at his words, his instructions, how seriously have the igbos taken his instructions so far? To start with, Nnamdi Kanu has given a number of sit-at-home orders. The compliance that greets every sit-at-home order is always amazing. The igbos are known to love their businesses so much, but when an order like this comes from their ‘supreme leader’ every other thing is secondary. Indeed Nnamdi Kanu has gathered enough weight in the east. Prior to the just concluded elections, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu gave an order, that they should not go out to vote, and as expected only a few of them collected their PVC. The popular saying then, from the streets of Aba down to Onitsha even through to the hilly roads of Nsukka, was that ‘we are not going to participate in any election in the zoo again’. Less than two days before the election that was earlier meant to be on the 16th of February, Nnamdi Kanu announced that the Federal Government has met his demands and an agreement has been reached, that they could go out and vote. As expected, those who have collected their PVC’s beforehand came out in full to vote, and the votes all pointed in one direction. The trust in this leader is indeed great.
To the average Igbo man who sees Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a form of god, his words are ‘yea and amen’. Every thing, information, allegation, accusation, that comes from Radio Biafra London, Israel or even Nigeria is true. It is no more a strange thing to hear the igbo man addressing people from other tribes of Nigeria with words like ‘ndi zoo’ (people of the zoo), because ‘our supreme leader’ made us believe Nigeria is a zoo…. It’s very ironic that sometimes they equally expect justice from the zoo. It is common to hear the average Igbo man say Buhari is dead, or we are ruled by a clone called Jubril, who said? Who killed him? While buttressing their point, the fact that ‘our supreme leader said’ is more than enough for them. They made claims like Buhari can no longer speak his native tongue-
fulfude. The most annoying thing is that they have little or no fact to back up their claim. The point is that the average Igbo man is only concerned with his goods in Ariaria market, Cemetery market, Onitsha main market and so on. He does not have time to verify most of the claims made by his leader. Only a few of the Igbo elites (literates) especially from Enugu state seem not to have bought into Nnamdi Kanu’s claims.
The Igbos are crying for freedom, secession, but it must come at a cost. It comes at the expense of leader who is ready to give his all, even to the death. Nnamdi Kanu has gone through a lot of troubles for his great faith in Biafra. His arrest back in 2015, his incarceration for about a year and so on, he has resolved not to bow, he has been beaten but he is not down. The igbos are no fool, little wonder why he has been given more preference and even likened to the legendary Odumegwu Ojukwu. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has risked all for this struggle. That is why his words are still a force to reckon with in the east. Go check the statistics of the just concluded elections you will know what I am talking about. Indeed his words are ‘YEA and AMEN’ in the east. It will not be out of place to call him the ‘Numero-Uno’ of the east.
