    Searching of people phone by any police officer on the road is a criminal offence Kwara CP tells offices

    The kwara state Police Comimissional Kayode Egbetokun, has warned the police officers against searching of people’s phone with the intent of extorting money from Innocent Nigerians, Stressing it’s unethical for them to do so.

    While briefing officers and jounalist at the state Command in Ilorin, the commision of police said checking and extortion is a criminal offence and will attract a stiff penlty

    “The police Boss stress on his statement that it’s is unethical to stop and searching anybody’s mobile phone on the road. He said the pratcie of some police officer on the act of serching phone of an individual on the road for evidence of internet fraud amount to conducting a roadside investigation ” He stated

    Egbetokun noted that he is worried of some media report of how some police officers on the road and on the highway patrol would stop and serch the phones of young undergraduate.

    More worrisome, he explained, is the demand of about N2,000 before their phnes could be relaesed to the student suspected to be yahoo yahoo frausters.

    While vowing that the command under his watch would not condone such an act, the Police Boss warned officers to desist from such activities.

    According to him, it is criminal offence for any policeman to extort any memer of the public by demanding money before releasing their mobile phones.

    “In some of these cases, the young men are mostly student who have come to study are made to part with a little or as much as N2,000 for their release or the release of their mobile set”.

    The commissional of Police and the Command frowns at this ugly trend and will stop t nothing in identifying and dealing with culprits of these acts.

    Henceforth, any police found to be engaging in any form of extortion while armed on the highway will be arrested , detained,tried and if found guilty, will be dismissed and charge with armed robbery, he said
