Super Eagles of Nigeria who settled for the bronze medal in the 2019 African Cup o Nations had on Wednesday, November 13 came back from a goal down to beat visiting Benin Republic 2-1 in 2021 AFCON qualifiers.
The Squirrels were not favourites going into the encounter having lost their last five encounters against the Super Eagles.
Stephane Sessegnon scored the goal for Benin Republic as he benefited from a sloppy defending from Super Eagles allowing him to beat helpless Daniel Akpeyi.
It however, took Nigeria about 40 minutes of intense labour to grab the equalizer after conceding in front of their fans. The goal came through Victor Osimhen who skillfully sent a penalty after Ola Aina was brought down.
The visitors marched into the second half determined to get their second goal through whatever means. The were quite unfortunate, as they could not break through the wall of Gibraltar that was formed by the duo of Ekong and Jamilu Collins.
Samuel Kalu scored the winning goal for Nigeria in the 62nd minute as Nigeria recorded maximum three points against Benin Republic.
